I have been waiting to see Bright since previews started appearing over the summer. I mean Will Smith, he doesn't really do bad movies and Netflix has been giving the people (us) what we want (more movies and shows!). I, of course was ready for Bright when it came out in December 2017. I did NOT look at any in-depth reviews or previews. Going in, the only thing I knew was Will Smith = cop. So I was curious when I saw this green fellow beside him in the Coming Soon email I received from Netflix.
The movie opens with an interesting scene of Jacoby (Joel Edgerton) ordering food and asking Ward if he wants “red or yellow sauce,” from a food cart on the sidewalk, while Ward (Will Smith) is abruptly confronted by a criminal. You can also find Ike Barinholtz (Mindy Project) and Jay Hernandez (Suicide Squad) as Sheriff Hernandez in Bright. There are also fairies (do NOT think Tinkerbell) and they are very unpleasant and rather aggressive. And if you haven’t guessed by now magic! Lets discuss Jacoby’s origin (I really don’t have origin details but), Orc’s are a complete other species and they aren't treated very well, reminds me of modern day minorities. The Orc's have their own language and their own code - Orcs hold clan law above all else. Orcs test loyalty and have a process (blooded) which is like a right of passage. Jacoby is not accepted by other Orcs because ha filed his teeth, this seems to be something very few Orcs do to conform to human(?) norms or to be socially accepted by non-Orcs. Oh and Elves! They clearly are the upper class and living the life. During the brief drive through Elftown (think Rodeo Drive), you could see that they were well off and very snobby. Rapid fire time: Shield of Light, Inferni and of course Bright. Shield of Light and organization that is preparing for the Dark Lords’ (not Voldemort) return and they have a tattoo that lights up with a black light (cool!). Inferni, rebel elves working with the Dark Lord to help bring him(?) back, by getting three magic wands they are able to raise someone…the Dark Lord from the dead. A Bright a being who can touch a wand (otherwise you pretty much implode…not very pretty). Have you seen this movie yet? If not, is it in your queue? And if you have seen it, will you watch the second one? I will be on the look out for the 2nd installment I am hoping to find out more about the Elf society and Elftown…I'm intrigued. Stop here if you have NOT watched the movie and plan to, or if you care about Spoiler Alert(s): I'm confused on what exactly happened to Will Smith after he was shot in the opening scene, i.e. how was he able to come back? What process does he have to go through? And I love the seemingly full circleness (yes I know not a word) of the young Orc that Jacoby let go being the same one that is about to take Jacoby’s life at the end. Of course he doesn’t do it but dad did. Did you have any favorite parts?!
